Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F review – a playful and nostalgic sequel

Eddie Murphy returns as Axel Foley in a film that's both buoyant and warm

The Detroit detective is no longer the fast young cop we last saw 30 years ago, but there's still plenty of life in the old dog yet

There's an art to crafting modern sequels to movies that otherwise put a full stop on their stories way back in the 80s or 90s. The heat is gone, replaced by warm nostalgia. But every now and then, a sequel comes along that manages to capture the spirit of the original while also feeling fresh and new. Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F is one of those sequels.

Eddie Murphy returns as Axel Foley, the Detroit detective who first graced our screens in 1984. Foley is no longer the fast young cop we last saw 30 years ago, but there's still plenty of life in the old dog yet. He's still got the same quick wit and sharp tongue, and he's still not afraid to bend the rules to get the job done.

The film begins with Foley in the midst of a chaotic mission, just like the first three movies in the series. This time, he's tracking down a group of art thieves who have stolen a priceless painting. Along the way, he teams up with two young cops, played by Taylour Paige and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The three of them make an unlikely team, but they quickly learn to trust each other and work together to solve the case.

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F is a fun and nostalgic sequel that will please fans of the original movies. Murphy is on top form as Foley, and the supporting cast is excellent. The film is full of action and laughs, and it's a great way to spend a couple of hours.
