Anatomy Of The Mouth

The Mouth: Gateway to the Digestive System

Anatomy of the Mouth

The oral cavity, commonly known as the mouth, marks the commencement of the digestive tract. Bounded laterally and anteriorly, it extends from the lips and cheeks to the pharynx.

Fauces (Isthmus of Fauces)

The fauces, also known as the oropharyngeal isthmus, is a constricted opening at the back of the mouth that leads into the throat. It is formed by the palatoglossal and palatopharyngeal arches, which are folds of tissue that help to prevent food and liquids from entering the nasal cavity.
